2.3. Optimising Dwell Time
As you learned in the previous section, Dwell Times are one of the parameters of Personality, and have an impact on lighting behavior. Referring back to the graphic of Organic Response lighting behavior, we can see that there are two types of Dwell Time: Dwell Time and LowLight Time.
Dwell Time defines the length of time it takes for a luminaire to dim from its occupancy state (motion or any other motion level signal received via the OIC) to its Lowlight state, once occupancy is no longer detected. If detecting motion via its own Response Sensor Node, the light will stay in an occupancy state until the Dwell Time has lapsed, after which it enters the Dwell Time state, and remains in this state for as long as:
occupancy messages are received from other luminaires, or
it detects motion again directly via its own Response SN3.
no further occupancy messages are received for the length of the Dwell Time after which, it enters its LowLight state for the defined Lowlight time.
The longer the Dwell Time, the longer the lights stay on, and the less energy is saved. Conversely, the shorter the Dwell Time, the quicker the lights will dim down, and the more energy will be saved; but the greater the risk of a false switch off of the lights. The default Dwell Time is 10 minutes, which strikes a conservative balance between energy efficiency and occupancy comfort.
LowLight Time defines the amount of time the luminaire remains in its LowLight state prior to switching off completely.
The default LowLight time is 10 minutes. Both of these times are adjustable using the smartphone app. Given that Dwell Time is also a function of the Personality that the Response Sensor Node is in at the time, changing a Sensor.
HOW TO ADJUST DWELL TIME (Response IR App)
Commands | Response from Node | Response from luminaire |
1. Point the dongle at the Response Sensor Node of the light you want to adjust and press the button showing your preferred Dwell Time. | Dome flashes red once to acknowledge receipt of Dwell Time command | The luminaire will immediately adopt the new Dwell Time |
2. Point the dongle at the Response Sensor Node of the light whose Dwell Time you have just adjusted and press the Relay button. Note: If you use the Relay Dwell Time command, it will adjust the Dwell Time of every Response Sensor Node that receives the message, so if you’re looking to adjust only some of the luminaire’s, adjust their Dwell Times individually. | Dome flashes red once to acknowledge receipt of Relay command, and then continues to flash red for 60 seconds. Dome of neighboring Response nodes luminaires that receive the Relay message will glow red for 60 seconds to indicate that they have received the Relay Dwell Time signal. Any Response node that does not glow red has not received the signal and has not changed its Dwell Time setting. | All the luminaires that received the relayed Dwell Time signal will immediately adopt the new Dwell Time setting. |
HOW TO ADJUST DWELL TIME (Response App)
Commands | Response from Node | Response from luminaire |
1.Choose “Configure Nodes“ or “EnOcean Switch” from the home screen | None | None |
2. Upon selection e.g. “Configure Nodes” Response App sends a 'Scan for Node ID' message in the background as you enter in “Light Output” menu and can see the “node selection“ at the top. | Dome will turn solid red to acknowledge selection of the node. | None |
3. If it is not the node you wished to select click on “Dismiss Node” or shake or pull-down refresh on your phone to select another node. | The node previously selected will settle its red dome to off and newly selected node will indicate it is selected by its red dome staying solid red. | None |
4. Select the Response sensor node of the light you want to adjust and press the button showing your preferred Dwell Time. Note: Remember to toggle relay on for setting low light for whole zone before dimming. | Dome flashes red once to acknowledge receipt of Dwell Time command Read the relay indication at the start of this Chapter | The luminaires will immediately adopt the new Dwell Time |
6. If you wish to query the dwell light press the “query” button. | Dome flashes red once to acknowledge receipt of command | None |
2.3.1 Personality & Dwell/Lowlight Time
A Response Sensor Node’s Dwell Time will override the default Dwell Time for the Personality. To help understand how the dwell times are associated with personality kindly see the transition explained below,
In factory default (e.g. out of box) a Response SN3 will have default dwell time of 10 seconds
This default dwell times will change with the change in personality. Refer to personality table (click here) for more details on each personality and their respective dwell times. As an example if a user changes from default open floor to super saver the dwell time for luminaires will change to 5 minutes
If a user now changes the dwell time to 10 minutes the system will override all future operations with new dwell time
As a user customizes the dwell time all subsequent changes to personality will follow the custom dwell time change e.g. a person now changing the personality to demo will have 10 minutes dwell time instead of 10 seconds as the personality table indicates.
